The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday (February 20).
The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister from Ganobhaban and the Ministers and State Ministers from the meeting room of the Cabinet Division through video conferencing.
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam briefed reporters at the Secretariat in the capital.
“One issue is coming up in the cabinet today,” he said. That is about making ‘Joy Bangla' the national slogan. It has been discussed in the cabinet. There is also a judgment in the High Court in 2020 – ‘Joy Bangla' should be considered as the national slogan. Necessary steps have to be taken in this regard. It was decided after a discussion in the cabinet that ‘Joy Bangla' should be promoted as a national slogan with a circular from the cabinet. We will issue a notification immediately. “
Asked how long it would take to make the notification, he said, “It shouldn't take more than two days, three days or four days.”
A writ petition was filed on December 4, 2017 by Supreme Court lawyer Bashir Ahmed saying “Joy Bangla” was the slogan of freedom fighters as well as all people of Bangladesh during the Liberation War in 1971.
Upon the writ a rule was issued by the bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah asking the government that why the slogan would not be declared as the national one.
The respondents to the rule were secretaries to the cabinet division, Law Ministry and Education Ministry.
