We must give more exposure to leg-spinners, says Mahmud

Sports Desk: Newly appointed Bangladesh national cricket team director Khaled Mahmud Sujon on Sunday said that each first-class team in the domestic cricket must have a local leg-spinner in playing XI in order to produce leg-spinners in the country.

Bangladesh are yet to produce a quality leg-spinner in domestic cricket which made them struggle in international cricket. Bangladesh batsmen’s inability to handle leg-spinners is well established in world cricket.

They had no answer against Australia’s leggy Adam Zampa’s spin in their last match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup. Zampa bagged five wickets in that game as Bangladesh registered their lowest total in the showpiece event.

Almost every team in the world has a regular leg-spinner in their best XI. Afghan spin wizard Rashid Khan, England leg-spinner Adil Rashid, Adam Zampa or Sri Lanka’s Hasaranga have already established them as match-winners for their respective teams and getting success for their team on a regular basis.

Of late the BCB has been stressing the importance of leg-spin, so much so that it even considered making it mandatory for each team to play one leg-spinner in each game during first-class cricket.

“We compulsorily need leg-spinners and each team must play a leg-spinner in domestic cricket in future. We can produce a leg-spinner immediately. This is impossible. We are yet to have a quality leg-spinner. We have no Zampa or Ish Sodhi but we have to improve with leg-spin. We have to make sure that how many overs a leg-spinner will bowl in the next first-class cricket. It’s all a matter of planning. But the most important thing is we have to give leg-spinners more opportunities in playing XI,” he said.

Earlier leg-spinner Aminul Islam Biplob was named as one of two additional players of the Bangladesh national team in Oman for ICC World T20 qualifiers but the 21-year old leg-spinner faced a surprise axing by the BCB after they decided only to keep Rubel in the tournament.
