NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs in India Raveesh Kumar confirmed it on Thursday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Dhaka to attend the birth centenary celebrations, but has postponed his visit to Belgium in the wake of the deadly Coronavirus outbreak, he said.

When Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went to Delhi and invited Indian PM Modi to attend the centenary, he accepted the invitation.

Prime Minister Modi will definitely attend the programme in Dhaka, the spokesperson confirmed.

Belgium’s capital Brussels was expected to host the India-European Union Summit – an annual event aiming to expand the strategic partnership.

Raveesh Kumar said the health authorities of both countries suggested that travelling should not take place now at this moment. “So, it has been decided that the summit will be rescheduled on a mutually convenient date,” he added.

PM Modi has already decided not to participate in any celebratory events for Holi festival this year because of the virus outbreak.
