Dhaka: The cabinet has approved the draft of ‘Mother of Humanity Social Work Award Policy, 2018’ for the contribution to social welfare.

The approval came from a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday.

Cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said awards will be given to those individuals or organisations who are working for the betterment of physically challenged, elderly people and underprivileged.

“The term ‘Mother of Humanity’ refers to the prime minister and it reflects her recognition as the Mother of Humanity on the international arena,” Shafiul Alam informed journalists.

The Britain-based ‘Channel 4’ dubbed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the ‘Mother of Humanity’ in 2017 after she extended her whole-hearted support and gave refuge to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people escaping persecution in the Rakhaine state of  Myanmar.  And accordingly the government is launching an award named after it.

As per the award guidelines, it is similar to the National Award. Five individuals or organisations will receive the awards on January 2, Social Welfare Day, the cabinet secretary added.
