An HC bench comprising of Justice Borhanuddin and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order Wednesday responding to a writ petition filed by Shahidul Alam’s wife Prof Rahnuma Ahmed.
Earlier in the day, Prof Rahnuma Ahmed filed the petition with the HC seeking the court's order upon the authorities concerned to provide Shahidul Alam with first-class division facilities in jail.
His lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua said a Dhaka court on August 27 ordered the authorities concerned to give division facilities to Shahidul. However, he was not getting any facilities in the jail.
Now, the social activist will get a bed, a table, a chair, a fan and other relevant facilities inside jail as per the jail code.
Earlier yesterday, one judge of a two-member High Court bench felt embarrassed to hear a bail petition filed by the international award-winning photographer and forwarded the petition to the Chief Justice for a decision.
According to rules, the Chief Justice will now form a new bench to hear the petition, said Barrister Joytirmoy Barua, the counsel for Shahidul Alam, managing director of Drik Gallery.
Shahidul’s lawyer Barrister Sarah Hossain filed the bail petition on August 28.
Detectives arrested Shahidul Alam from his Dhanmondi residence on August 5 and the case was filed against him with Ramna Police Station on August 6.
He was also placed on a seven-day remand in the case. Police claimed that he spread propaganda through his Facebook account during the student movement demanding safe roads.
