Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) has withdrawn six policemen who were on duty at a court when UNO Gazi Tarek Salman was sent to jail in a defamation case.

They are Sub-Inspector (SI) Nripen Das, Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI) Sachin, and Mahabub, and Constables Jahangir, Hanif and Sujan.

Assistant Commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of Police Nasiruddin Mallik confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune early Sunday.

He said they were closed to police line for administrative reasons.

Barisal Bar Association President Obaedullah Saju filed the Tk5 crore defamation case with Barisal Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on June 7 for using the portrait in invitation cards for the last Independence Day’s official event organised by the local administration, when Gazi Tarek was the UNO of Barisal’s Agoiljhara upazila.

Salman was sent to jail regarding the case on July 12 and was released on bail on July 13.

The portrait, drawn by a class V student in Barisal, was selected through an official competition on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s birthday and printed on the back of an invitation card for the local administration’s Independence Day official event.

The incident sparked off huge public outcry throughout Bangladesh.

Awami League has since suspended Saju from his post as Barisal city unit Religious Affairs secretary.
