Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has greeted the nation and paid homage to the party’s founders on the occasion of its 68th founding anniversary, saying the Awami League would remain beside the people and turn the country into Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“On this day, I respectfully recall the greatest Bangali of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman… Awami League’s founder president Mawlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and general secretary Shamsul Haque… Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy,” she said in a statement issued on Thursday.

She greeted the party workers, leaders and supporters on the occasion as well, saying the unflinching dedication of the party’s succeeding leaders and workers over the decades turned the Awami League into a huge organisation of the common people.

Hasina said there had been national and international conspiracies to destroy the Awami League, but none of them was successful.

In the last few years, the Awami League government carried out tremendous development in all sectors, specially agriculture, education, health, communication, information technology, infrastructure, power, rural economic growth, diplomatic successes and cooperation as per its electoral pledges.

“Bangladesh is now a role model in development. Our GDP growth stands at 7.24% and poverty rate has come down to 22%, while per capita income has increased to $1,602. The reserve has crossed $32 billion. Around 15 million unemployed people got jobs,” she noted.

“Some 5.5 million people are getting benefits under the social safety net, while 80% people are getting electricity,” Hasina said, adding that the country was now self-sufficient in food production.

She further said the Awami League government connected Bangladesh with the highway of development while the Padma Multipurpose Bridge is being constructed with the country’s own finance.

“The defeated forces of the Liberation War are trying to create unrest and an unstable situation across the country, but no evil forces will be allowed to grow on our soil and there is no room for terrorists and militants here,” she warned.

Sheikh Hasina said her government was pledge-bound to turn Bangladesh into a prosperous country by implementing their Vision 2021 and Vision 2041, and urged everyone, irrespective of party affiliation and opinions, to come forward and continue this trend of development.
