Bangladesh-and-Denmark1News desk: The Danish government has allocated Tk 3.6 million to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for disaster relief of Rohingya settlements near Cox's Bazar in the wake of the cyclone ‘Mora'.

The Danish contribution will first and foremost be used for building new shelters in the settlements of Kutupalong, Balukhali, Leda and Shamlapur in Cox's Bazar district.

The assistance will also provide other necessary households items that have been destroyed in the storm.

“These people are living in areas extremely prone to natural disasters like the cyclone Mora. IOM Bangladesh is doing a fantastic job in Cox's Bazar and Denmark is happy to help in any way we can,” said Danish Ambassador Mikael Hemniti Winther.

In February 2017, the Danish government contributed with Tk 61.3 million to UNICEF's emergency relief plan for children.

Cyclone Mora hit Cox's Bazar and most of the south eastern parts of Bangladesh on May 30. The number of casualties was luckily low compared to previous cyclones in Bangladesh.

However, three makeshift settlements housing of undocumented Rohingya refugees have been severely damaged by the cyclone. 80.000 Undocumented Rohingyas are fully or partially without shelter as a result of the cyclone, according to IOM Bangladesh.

The Rohingyas have limited resources and thus ability to build solid shelters and infrastructure is poor. IOM reports that 17.000 homes are destroyed, 243 latrines and tube wells are unusable, it said.unb
