The Australian High Commission in Bangladesh has received an email demanding Tk500,000 as extortion, with a threat of a bomb attack at the high commission office if it refuses to make the payment.

The email was sent from an unknown email account on Tuesday afternoon.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Diplomatic Security Division) Md Jasim Uddin told Dhaka Tribune: “The identity of the sender of the mail is yet to be confirmed by police until a report is filed. Security measures have been increased around the high commission office as well as the entire diplomatic zone.”

Gulshan police Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakar Siddique has said: “An email, containing a mobile number and a bank account number, was sent to the high commission’s email address. DMP Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime division is investigating the matter.”

A DMP Detective Branch official, seeking anonymity, has said that the bank account number, mentioned in the email, belongs to a businessman residing in the Badda area of Dhaka.

“When the businessman was nabbed, he told police that someone had conspired against him and used his bank account number to get him into trouble,” said the DB official.

Police said legal measures will be taken in this regard. However, no complaint was lodged with the police in this connection.
