download (1)Dhaka desk: Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Thursday said that the government plans to hike by five times the existing tuition fees of public universities and government colleges.

“I want to see the types of feedbacks resulting from this decision,” he said while speaking at a pre-budget discussion with representatives of different NGOs at the NEC Conference Room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.

State Minister for finance and planning MA Mannan, Secretary to the planning ministry Ziaul Islam, former caretaker government advisor and Executive Director of Campaign for Popular Education Rasheda K Chowdhury, Trustee of Gana Shasthaya Kendra Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, among others, were present at the programme.

At the discussion, the finance minister appreciated the school feeding programme introduced at govt primary schools in remote areas as “it provides nutrition to the boys and girls besides providing an incentive to attending classes”. He expressed hopes to enhance this programme across the country.

Muhith, however, expressed dissatisfaction over the social-safety network programme because of irregularities in distribution of incentives and allowances among the beneficiaries.

The minister further said that the government will not sanction any allocation in the new budget for the construction of new roads. Only the existing roads will be repaired and upgraded when necessary, he added.
