An expert committee of the health ministry yesterday submitted a report before the High Court stating that they found excessive radiation emitted from the mobile operators’ towers, which is harmful for public health in accordance with the guidelines of World Health Organisation (WHO).
The report suggested the High Court to direct the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to take initiative to examine the base transceiver stations (BTS) of the country’s mobile operators so that the radiation emitted from the towers could be reduced and kept it under control in line with WHO guidelines.
Deputy Attorney General Kazi Jinat Haque placed the report before the High Court of Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Md Salim for passing its order.
However, the HC bench asked the BTRC to inform it by March 28 on what steps it has taken to reduce the control the radiation of BTS in the country.
In 2013, the expert committee prepared the report after examining radiation from some mobile towers in Dhaka city.
The health ministry formed the five-member expert committee on March 24 in 2013 led by the head of electrical and electronic engineering department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
