pm-hasina4Dhaka desk: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday wondered where from the militants get the money and arms and who are their patrons as many students choosing the wrong path of militancy after going to many developed countries for high education.

“Now the question is who are providing them (militants) with arms, who are giving money and who are encouraging them. Students are going in the path of militancy after going to many developed countries?” she questioned.

The Prime Minister was speaking at her office marking the distribution of Bangladesh University Grants Commission's (UGC's) gold medals among the winners of 2013 and 2014.

Sheikh Hasina said such incidents are taking place in some educational institutions in the country as well.

She urged the vice-chancellors and teachers, present at the programme, to keep watch on their students what they are doing, where they are going and why students remain absent in their classes for a long time.

The Prime Minister said many problems emerge in the world sometimes. “Now the problems are terrorism and militancy, these are not the problems in our country alone…it's there in various Islamic countries across the globe as well,” she said wondering how brilliant, educated and rich people can indulge in fanaticism.

She said Islam is a religion of peace and this religion never allows killing any innocent person.

Criticising the trend of being suicide attackers, the Prime Minister said Islam said suicide is a great sin and this is not possible to mix the great sin (suicide) with the great religion (Islam). “The people of Bangladesh are pious, not fanatics.”

She firmly said the people of every religion will perform their rituals peacefully and independently in Bangladesh as it has been built with non-communal spirit.  “Fanaticism maligns the image of great religion Islam.”

She also said drug addiction is another social menace and laid emphasis on bringing back children from this dark path, and said guardians and teachers have got the greater responsibility in this regard.

With UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid also spoke at the programme.unb
