Dhaka desk: US ambassador Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat yesterday called on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to discuss the current political situation in Bangladesh.
“As an ambassador, it is my responsibility to understand the current political climate by meeting leaders of various political parties. We discussed a wide range of issues as it is routine,” Bernicat told reporters after the two-hour-long meeting at Khaleda’s Gulshan office.
The ambassador mentioned that she had recently met Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader and that she would also meet other political leaders soon.
She, however, refused to answer any questions by the media. BNP leaders too kept mum on the meeting’s outcome.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Dr Abdul Moin Khan and Khaleda’s adviser Reaz Rahman, among other, were present on the occasion.
Bernicat was accompanied by the US embassy’s political section chief Andrea Brouillette-Rodriguez and political officer Dan Rakob.
