\"\"Dhaka:<\/strong> Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen welcomed the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken for his announcement that Myanmar military committed genocide against its minority Rohingya.<\/p>\n

“We, welcome the statement of US secretary of state and we hope Myanmar will\u00a0repatriate their people (Rohingya) on a priority basis,” he told media at the\u00a0foreign ministry here today.<\/p>\n

The foreign minister said it is good news that after Canada, the most\u00a0superpower like the US recognized the atrocity against Rohingya as a\u00a0genocide.<\/p>\n

“This US recognition has made our position stronger as Dhaka has been saying\u00a0the atrocity committed against Rohingya as genocide from the beginning of the\u00a0influx,” he said.<\/p>\n

Dr Momen also hoped that the US announcement might help the Gambia case filed\u00a0with International Criminal Court against Myanmar.<\/p>\n

The foreign minister expressed he believes that after Blinken's announcement, the Biden administration will put more pressure on Myanmar to take back the
\nRohingya people from Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

“I do believe, if the world's big power will push (Myanmar), there will be a\u00a0solution (of Rohingya repatriation),” he said, adding that Dhaka would be\u00a0very happy if the US Secretary of State's announcement expedites the Rohingya\u00a0repatriation.<\/p>\n

The foreign minister said the Rohingya crisis is not Bangladesh's liability,\u00a0rather it is the responsibility and obligation of the world leaders.<\/p>\n

The formal deceleration of genocide against Rohingya was made by<\/p>\n

Blinken made the announcement at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in\u00a0Washington, D.C. on Monday.<\/p>\n

Blinken said evidence showed the “attack against Rohingya was widespread and\u00a0systematic, which is crucial for reaching a determination of crimes against\u00a0humanity.”<\/p>\n

Since August 25 in 2017, Bangladesh has been hosting over 1.1 million\u00a0forcefully displaced Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar district and most of them\u00a0arrived there after a military crackdown by Myanmar, which the UN called a\u00a0“textbook example of ethnic cleansing” and other rights groups dubbed it as\u00a0“genocide”.<\/p>\n

In the last four and half years, not a single Rohingya went back home.\u00a0Myanmar agreed to take them back, but repatriation attempts failed twice due\u00a0to trust deficit among the Rohingyas about their safety and security in\u00a0Rakhine state<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
