Bornomalanews:<\/strong> In New York City, a global beacon that attracts diverse populations from around the world, there were no South Asian or Muslim women among the members of the city council.<\/p>\n

Things changed on Tuesday when former city council employee Shahana Hanif won an election in the Brooklyn district, which covers Park Slope, Kensington, and part of central Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

Hanif, an American from Bangladesh, was the first Muslim woman to be elected to the council in history, despite an estimated 769,000 Muslims living in the city.<\/p>\n

She was one of the South Asian candidates who ran for council seats. Both Shekar Krishnan and Felicia Singh participated in the uncalled Queens Race.<\/p>\n

The city council is also expected to include the first gay black women next year. Christine Richardson Jordan in Harlem and Crystal Hudson in Brooklyn, which includes Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Fort Greene, and parts of Clinton Hill. And Bedford-Stuyvesant.<\/p>\n
