GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories, Dec 27, 2020 (BSS\/AFP) \u2013 Hamas on
\nSaturday denounced as \u201cbarbaric\u201d overnight strikes it said damaged a Gaza
\nchildren\u2019s hospital, while Israel\u2019s army said it was responding to rocket
\nfire from the enclave.<\/p>\n

The Israeli army said it struck three Hamas targets, including a rocket
\nmanufacturing site, underground infrastructure and a military post, after two
\nrockets were fired from the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

But Gaza\u2019s ruling Hamas in a statement said a \u201cbarbaric\u201d Israeli strike had
\ndamaged a children\u2019s hospital and a centre for people with special needs.<\/p>\n

Medical sources in Gaza said the strikes \u201clightly wounded\u201d two civilians,
\nincluding a child.<\/p>\n

The Israeli army, however, insisted on Saturday afternoon that it did not
\nhit the hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecondary explosions, which were identified from the strike on the Hamas
\nrocket manufacturing site, are suspected of causing the damage to the nearby
\nlocated hospital,\u201d an army statement said.<\/p>\n

Hamas \u201cdeliberately places military targets at the heart of densely
\npopulated areas\u201d, while the Israeli army \u201ctakes all possible precautions to
\navoid harming civilians and civilian buildings\u201d, the statement added.<\/p>\n

Sirens had sounded on Friday night in the southern port city of Ashkelon
\nand the area surrounding the Gaza Strip, according to an earlier army
\nstatement.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israeli territory,\u201d the
\nstatement said, adding that they were intercepted by the Iron Dome Aerial
\nDefence System.<\/p>\n

There were no reports of damage as a result of the interceptions.<\/p>\n

Israeli emergency medical services said several people were treated for
\nshock.<\/p>\n

The latest fire from the Palestinian enclave came over a month after one
\nrocket was launched from the coastal strip into Israel.<\/p>\n

Islamist group Hamas, which Israel considers a terrorist organisation,
\nseized control of Gaza from rival Palestinian movement Fatah in 2007 in a
\nnear civil war.<\/p>\n

Since then, Hamas has fought three devastating wars with Israel in the
\nterritory, where about two million Palestinians live.<\/p>\n

Israel has since maintained a crippling blockade on the Gaza Strip to
\nprevent Hamas from arming.<\/p>\n
