\"\" WILMINGTON, United States, Dec 23, 2020 (BSS\/AFP) \u2013 President-elect Joe Biden said Tuesday he will ask Congress for another Covid-19 relief bill when he takes office, insisting that Americans want Republicans and Democrats to work together again after Donald Trump goes.<\/p>\n

Biden cast himself as a leader eager to work for the whole country during a national health and economic crisis, in contrast to Trump\u2019s divisive style.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a clear understanding that these issues go beyond any ideology. People are desperately hurting and the Republicans are hurting as badly as Democrats,\u201d he told reporters in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, where he is preparing his transition to power on January 20.<\/p>\n

Congress passed a $900 billion economic relief bill on Monday after months of wrangling.<\/p>\n

But coronavirus deaths are rocketing and the economy remains at risk after a year of severe disruption. Biden said more assistance for businesses, the unemployed and healthcare facilities is needed \u2014 and quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongress did its job this week. And I can and I must ask them to do it again next year,\u201d Biden said during a pre-holidays speech to the nation before taking questions from journalists.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis bill is just a first step \u2014 a down payment \u2014 on addressing the crisis we\u2019re in. We have a lot more work to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked how he intends to bridge the Republican-Democratic divide in the post-Trump era, Biden said members of Congress would welcome his offer of leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a different team in town. I\u2019m not going to villainize the opposition. I\u2019m going to stand and say \u2018This is what we\u2019ve got to do,\u2019 because they know it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is life and death. That\u2019s why I believe we\u2019ll get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to work in a bipartisan way,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cThat\u2019s the only way we\u2019re going to get through this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden cited the need for more resources for vaccine distribution, for testing to reopen schools, and for support for everyone from firefighters and police to nurses.<\/p>\n

Addressing the \u201cmillions of hurting families who are unable to put food on the table, pay rent or the mortgage,\u201d he said they would all continue to need help well into next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing I promise you about my leadership during this crisis: I\u2019m going to tell it to you straight. I\u2019m going to tell you the truth,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd here\u2019s the simple truth. Our darkest days in the battle against Covid are ahead of us, not behind us. We need to prepare ourselves, to steel our spines.\u201d<\/p>\n
