Nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal as the coach Sam Mussabini in the 1981 award-winning film \u201cChariots of Fire\u201d \u2014 which also saw him earn his second BAFTA and best supporting actor award at the Cannes Film Festival \u2014 Holm appeared in a host of top international films.<\/p>\n
He played the main antagonist Ash in the first \u201cAlien\u201d movie, and featured in \u201cThe Madness of King George\u201d and \u201cThe Aviator\u201d.<\/p>\n
Holm suffered with a Parkinson\u2019s related illness, his agency said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is with great sadness we can confirm that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88,\u201d said the statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe died peacefully in hospital with his family and carer.\u201d<\/p>\n
US actress Mia Farrow led a parade of stars paying their respects, calling Holm \u201cunfailingly brilliant\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was among the giants of the theatre,\u201d said Farrow, who appeared on stage with Holm at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).<\/p>\n
British comic and actor Eddie Izzard tweeted: \u201cThe great Ian Holm is dead. Wonderful actor and it\u2019s so sad to see him go. Farewell, you did great work Sir.\u201d<\/p>\n
Director Edgar Wright said Holm was \u201ca genius actor who brought considerable presence to parts funny, heartbreaking and terrifying\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u2013 Late global fame \u2013<\/p>\n
Among the other notable movies he appeared in were \u201cOh! What A Lovely War\u201d, \u201cTime Bandits\u201d, \u201cThe Day After Tomorrow\u201d, and \u201cThe Fifth Element\u201d.<\/p>\n
His final film role came in 2014 in \u201cThe Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies\u201d.<\/p>\n
His portrayal of Bilbo Baggins in the \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d trilogy secured global fame in later life.<\/p>\n
But he had already established himself before that as a star of the theatre with the RSC, which he joined in 1958, and appeared regularly on British TV.<\/p>\n
He won a Tony in 1967 for his perfomance as Lenny in the premier of Harold Pinter\u2019s play \u201cThe Homecoming\u201d on Broadway.<\/p>\n
He was Pinter\u2019s favourite actor: \u201cHe puts on my shoe, and it fits!\u201d the playwright is reported as saying.<\/p>\n
The artistic director of the RSC, Gregory Doran, called Holm \u201cquite simply one of the RSC greats\u201d.<\/p>\n
The National Theatre in London, where he performed a memorable Lear in 1997, described him as an \u201cextraordinary actor\u201d in a tweet.<\/p>\n
As well as his Oscar nomination he was also nominated for six British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards.<\/p>\n
BAFTA said it was \u201cvery sorry\u201d to hear of his death.<\/p>\n
Holm was born in Essex, east of London, to a psychiatrist father and a mother who was a nurse, in 1931.<\/p>\n
He was awarded a knighthood in 1998 for services to drama.<\/p>\n
As well as his acting career, he also served in the British Army, completing national service in Austria.<\/p>\n
He was married four times and had five children. His third wife was \u201cDownton Abbey\u201d star Penelope Wilton.<\/p>\n
