Walsh was appointed as head coach for this series only but the challenge is different altogether given the team has been going through an extraordinary bad phase, something which left country’s cricket in cornered state.

Following the devastating series in South Africa, Bangladesh received a further setback when Chandika Hathurusingha left the job of head coach all of a sudden. The BCB appointed Khaled Mahmud Sujon, a board director, as the senior team's technical director in January this year but the team's results in the ODI tri-series and the Test and T20 series against Sri Lanka was awful, prompting BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon vow to be more involved in the team. The BCB chief is expected to travel to Sri Lanka with several board directors during the Nidahas Trophy T20I tri-series.

“Everything happened in a rush in the last time. It is different now since there’s someone who is responsible for organising and ensuring things are done properly. I will be trying to have dialogues with all the relevant parties, as to what’s required. I think it is good for someone to be able to hold their hand up and say yes or no to what’s happening. I am excited to be in that position. I am sure I will get the full support of the BCB, president, directors, senior players and even the junior players. Once everybody comes to the table and we work together, it will be good to start planning how we go from here,” Walsh said in his pre-departure press conference in Mirpur yesterday. The team will leave for Colombo today.

“There will be specific targets, what we want to achieve and how we will go about doing it. We have started the discussion already. We will fine-tune once everybody arrive in Sri Lanka. My target will be to win as many games as possible on this tour. I am very hopeful that we can do so. It will be nice to get into the finals. We are taking it each game at a time, at this point.”

Walsh, the legendary Caribbean fast bowler, said he would try to help the players to let go of any added pressure. “I will tell them to go out there and express themselves and enjoy the game. They have to execute the game plan as best as they can. It is no point going into a game with added pressure. We have to relax and enjoy what we are doing, with purpose. I want them to feel proud playing for Bangladesh.”

Walsh last week conducted a special camp which had 14 pacers including those who were later picked in the 16-man squad for the Nidahas Trophy. They worked under Walsh in between domestic one-day matches.

“I am hopeful that the execution on match day will be good. The camp was focused on them. Now they have to go and execute it in the middle. We will be depending on Rubel, Mustafizur, Taskin who has been recalled, along with Rony and Rahi.”

With Shakib finally ruled out from the tournament, Walsh also urged the players to step up in absence of the ace all-rounder.

“Everybody has to step up to the plate. Shakib is still getting treatment we have to plan at the moment without him being there. I don’t want to divulge too much of the plans. We are going to have to do things a bit differently in this absence. He is a hard player to replace overnight. He does everything – bat, bowl, field and captain.”
