Sports deesk: Bangladesh wouldn’t like to be fazed by the failure in the Test and Tri-nation series as they gear up for the two-match T20 series against Sri Lanka, starting from Thursday. The series is believed to be served them up well for the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka, a tri-nation T20 series involving Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh to mark Sri Lanka’s 70th year of Independence.

A good show in T20 format only could cure the pain as Bangladesh came off a miserable failure in the tri-nation and Test series. Which hurts Bangladesh more is that they simply couldn’t keep up the performance that they showed initially in the both of the format. They started with three straight victories in the tri-nation series, raising the hope of clinching the trophy for the first time in a series involving more than two teams. But two consecutive defeats at the hands of the Sri Lanka including the final broke their dream. They hold off Sri Lanka in the first Test despite being cornered but gained the psychological advantages ahead of the series deciding second Test. However the batsmen put a worse performance and the fielders shelled some important catches in crucial moment to let them down.

It was believed that those bad performances would put an adverse impact on the team in the T20 series as the players look to be psychologically down, with various type of criticism regarding the team selection and players’ performance coming to the fore.

“It is obvious, if you think about the performance of the Test and tri-nation series, it would put an adverse impact,” admitted Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar, who was called up for T20 format, after being dropped from the ODI and Test team.

“It’s a new format and some new faces came into the side. What is our advantage is that these new players haven’t had any headache about the result of the tri-nation and Test series because they were not the part of the team. They are here to cement their place and they know they need to perform well.”

According to Soumya, there is no clear favourite in the shorter format of the cricket and the team who would play well, they will win the game.

“It’s the smallest format of the cricket so gaining momentum from the start of the match is important. There is no clear favourite. The team who will play well, they will win.”

It’s also a series for Soumya to make his case stronger as he is no longer a first choice in the Test and ODI format. In fact he was dropped from the both of the format for the first time since his debut in 2015. Though he was off-colour in Test and ODI format in the last one year, his T20 record was excellent. He was in fact the highest run-getter for Bangladesh in this format.

Soumya said his only goal at the moment is to play well in the upcoming series.

“I have played some domestic matches and worked hard with my fitness in the period when I was not the part of national team. Now I’ll get two matches in the T20 format, I hope I would perform well and thereby bolster my confidence,” he said.
