In a letter to Trump and top Republicans and Democrats in Congress, the\u00a0business leaders — who also included executives at Cisco, eBay, General\u00a0Motors, Marriott and Microsoft — warned of the economic impact of forcing\u00a0almost 800,000 people back into the legal shadows.<\/p>\n
The White House reiterated that Trump has not yet decided whether to end\u00a0the Obama-era program that allowed children brought to the country illegally\u00a0before they were 16 to get a two-year renewable work permit.<\/p>\n
The program known as DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, was\u00a0instituted by then president Barack Obama in 2012 via executive order and\u00a0could be repealed by Trump with the stroke of a pen.<\/p>\n
Recipients of the program “grew up in America, registered with our\u00a0government, submitted to extensive background checks and are diligently\u00a0giving back to our communities and paying income taxes,” the CEOs argued in\u00a0the letter.<\/p>\n
These “hardworking young people will lose their ability to work legally in\u00a0this country, and every one of them will be at immediate risk of deportation.<\/p>\n
Our economy would lose $460.3 billion from the national GDP and $24.6 billion\u00a0in Social Security and Medicare tax contributions.<\/p>\n
Trump had vowed to end the program and is under fierce pressure by anti-immigrant supporters to make good on that promise.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Fox News reported that Trump would stop issuing DACA permits\u00a0and allow the existing ones to expire.<\/p>\n
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the policy was still\u00a0under review. “A final decision on that front has not been made,” she said.<\/p>\n
– Fear of deportation –<\/p>\n
DACA recipients fear their legal status could lapse and authorities would\u00a0be able to locate them easily for deportation.<\/p>\n
The policy has become tied up in a debate about congressional funding for\u00a0Trump's proposed wall on the border with Mexico.<\/p>\n
Some in Congress have suggested a deal could be reached for the permit\u00a0system to remain in place if Congress agrees to release funding for the wall.<\/p>\n
White House officials offered differing views on when Trump may make a\u00a0decision. Some said it could come this week and others said it would have to\u00a0wait until after mega-storm Harvey subsides.<\/p>\n
