\"China-US1\"International desk: China urged the United States and North Korea yesterday to be \u201ccautious\u201d with their words and actions after the two sides stepped up their bellicose rhetoric over Pyongyang\u2019s weapons programme, reports AFP from Beijing.<\/p>\n

Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang called on both sides to avoid \u201cgoing down the old path of alternately showing strength and continuously escalating the<\/p>\n

situation\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current situation on the Korean Peninsula is highly complicated and sensitive. We call on the relevant parties to be cautious with their words and actions, and contribute more toward easing tensions and enhancing mutual trust,\u201d Geng said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The spokesman was responding to a question about North Korea threatening to fire missiles towards Guam and US President Donald Trump\u2019s dire warnings against North Korea.<\/p>\n

Trump on Thursday hardened his warning that<\/p>\n

North Korea would face \u201cfire and fury\u201d if it kept threatening the US, saying maybe that tough talk \u201cwasn\u2019t tough enough\u201d.<\/p>\n

The US president also warned North Korea it should be \u201cvery, very nervous\u201d of the consequences if it even thinks of attacking US soil, after nuclear-armed Pyongyang said it was readying plans to launch missiles towards the Pacific territory of Guam.<\/p>\n

Geng\u2019s statement did not address Trump\u2019s comment that China, Pyongyang\u2019s main diplomatic ally and economic partner, could \u201cdo a lot more\u201d to pressure Kim to<\/p>\n

end his country\u2019s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.<\/p>\n

China has repeatedly called for dialogue to peacefully resolve the mounting tensions, but its proposal for<\/p>\n
