\"president8\"News desk: President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday stressed the need for creating a strong social movement against corruption at the grassroots level to make people aware of the adverse impacts of graft on society.<\/p>\n

“There's no alternative to creating awareness at all levels to fight graft,” he said when a four-member delegation of the national anti-graft agency, led by its chairman Iqbal Mahmood, presented its Annual Rerport-2016 to him at Bangabhaban.<\/p>\n

President's Press Secretary Joynal Abedin briefed reporters after the meeting.<\/p>\n

President Hamid advised the Commission to conduct probes against graft suspects properly so that those can bring positive results.unb<\/p>\n

Apprising the President about the Commission's overall activities, ACC chief Iqbal Mahmood said the ACC received nearly 13,000 graft allegations in 2016.<\/p>\n

Of the allegations, he said, the Commission initiated probes into 1,007, while 588 were sent to departments or ministries concerned for taking necessary departmental action.<\/p>\n

Iqbal Mahmood said the ACC filed 359 graft cases in 2016 while it arrested 13 graft suspects red-handed while taking bribe and filed ‘trap cases' against them. Besides, he said, the ACC officials arrested 388 graft suspects in 2016 in different graft cases.<\/p>\n

The ACC chief said the Commission made a total of 65 recommendations in the ACC's Annual Report recommending steps to check graft in 10 sectors.<\/p>\n

About its prevention activities, Mahmood said the Commission has formed 21,000 Satata Sanghas (integrity units) at secondary schools and madrasas across the country to keep the future generation away from corruption.<\/p>\n

The ACC held 30 public hearings in 2016 to create awareness at the grassroots revel against corruption.<\/p>\n
