Dhaka desk: BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday tweeted that they wanted to get rid of evil political practices, such as ransacking of the oppositon's office using the police, without any reason. \u201cWe want to remove evil political practices from Bangladesh,\u201d she said in her tweet on 3:29pm yesterday.<\/p>\n
The former premier made this comment from her tweeter account a day after law enforcers raided her Gulshan office. However, they found nothing during the more than two-hour-long search.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded the resignation of home affairs minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for “illegally conducting the search operation at the party chairperson\u2019s office”.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe police illegally conducted the search operation at the BNP chairperson\u2019s office. That\u2019s why we want the home minister to quit his job. He must step down bearing the responsibility over the raid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Fakhrul was speaking at a press conference at the party\u2019s central office at Naya Paltan in the city.<\/p>\n
Terming the police action provocative and unprecedented, the BNP secretary general said it had set a bad example before the nation. \u201cIt's an ominous sign for politics and would remain as a tainted chapter in the country's history,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
He alleged that the police raid was conducted on a baseless allegation to destroy any possibility of a democratic future. \u201cSuch an incident never took place in the history of Bangladesh,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said the search operation had been conducted at a time when the BNP initiated a peaceful democratic and political practice by presenting its \u201cVision 2030\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cThis incident will spoil the future of democracy here,\u201d the BNP leader said.<\/p>\n
Fakhrul expressed his concern that the government has again initiated a mass arrest of BNP leaders and activists across the country.<\/p>\n
Joynal Abedin, BNP vice-chairman and president of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association, alleged that the police did not carry out the search operation in accordance with Sections 96 and 103 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC ).\u00a0 It was a violation of law, he noted.\u00a0 He said they would take the next course of action in the regard after scrutinising different aspects of the event. Advocate Nitay Roy Chowdhury, Ataur Rahman Dhali, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokan, Shahiduddin Chowdury Anie and Shama Obayed, among others, were present on the occasion.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the party has decided to seek explanation from the government as to why police conducted the search operation at the Gulshan office without any acceptable reason. BNP standing committee took the decision at an urgent meeting in Gulshan with Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair yesterday. The party will seek the explanation through a press conference or a press statement today, according to meeting sources. The meeting began at 9:50pm and lasted for about two hours. Party leaders strongly protested and condemned the police action and termed the search illegal and provocative one.<\/p>\n
The party has decided to hold a public meeting at Suhrawardy Udyan on May 24 and stage demonstration across the country on the following day protesting the raid on the Gulshan office, said sources.<\/p>\n
The standing committee members also discussed the possible filing of a case in this connection. The meeting entrusted the party chief with the responsibility to take decision on filing such a case in consultation with senior lawyers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
