The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has approved a proposal to rename the Park Street of the Indian capital after Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.<\/div>\n

The approval came from a NDMC meeting Thursday a day before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina\u2019s arrival on a four-day official visit, reports BSS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The authority took the decision to express a \u201cfriendly gesture\u201d by circular motion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been decided to rename Park Street after the founder of Bangladesh \u2013Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman \u2014 ahead of Sheikh Hasina\u2019s visit. This is like a friendly gesture as India shares cordial relations with Bangladesh,\u201d a senior NDMC official told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision was arrived at through a circular motion as a council meeting could not be convened for the purpose due to the shortage of time and with the model code of conduct being in place because of MCD polls,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

According to NDMC officials, 12 of the council members including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal agreed to the proposal.<\/p>\n

NDMC Vice Chairman Karan Singh Tanwar, said, \u201cThe task of changing the sign boards will be carried out tonight to ensure that it is completed before the Bangladesh PM\u2019s arrival.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina, the elder daughter of Bangabandhu, is paying the visit at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.<\/p>\n

It is Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina\u2019s maiden official visit to India after her present government was voted to power through the January 5 elections in 2014.<\/p>\n

The Bangladesh premier last visited India in January 2010 which was reciprocated by her Indian counterpart in June 2015.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
