The 136th assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) wrapped up in Dhaka on Wednesday with the Dhaka Declaration calling to end all inequalities around the world and stop outside interference in the internal matters of a sovereign state.<\/div>\n

Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury announced the conclusion of the five-day conference at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).<\/p>\n

A draft resolution with 18 points was passed by the IPU Standing Committee on Peace and International Security on Tuesday and adopted by the General Assembly on the last day.<\/p>\n

The conference, which began on Saturday with the theme \u201cReaddressing inequalities: delivering on dignity and well-being for all,\u201d was attended by around 1,500 delegates from 131 countries.<\/p>\n

The event was organised jointly by Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad and the IPU.<\/p>\n

During the conference, parliamentarians from around the world discussed ways to fight widening inequalities, violence and militancy as a global problem.<\/p>\n

The conversation started with Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi\u2019s call to fight against inequality \u2013 a threat to peace and security and a form of economic violence \u2013 during his keynote speech at the opening ceremony.<\/p>\n

The parliamentarians agreed that extreme inequalities come at a high cost to society, stalling economic growth and undermining democratic process.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot continue to view the gap between rich and poor as business as usual. This assembly is one of many steps that need to be taken to ensure that the well-being and dignity of all is respected,\u201d said IPU President Saber Hossain Chowdhury.<\/p>\n

The IPU member states also adopted a comprehensive resolution to ensure women\u2019s access to financial mechanisms.<\/p>\n

The 136th assembly observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the terrorist attacks in St Petersburg, Russia. During the assembly, IPU President Saber Hossain Chowdhury condemned the chemical attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib province, Syria.<\/p>\n

The international community was also urged to stand beside the people of Yemen, South Sudan, Kenya and Somalia, affected by war, drought and famine.<\/p>\n

In a press conference after the concluding ceremony, the IPU president said with this event, Bangladesh\u2019s relationship with the rest of the world had gotten stronger.<\/p>\n

He also called the conference \u201cgreen\u201d \u2013 the IPU would take measures to compensate for the carbon emission caused by this five-day event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
