AFP, WASHINGTON: Donald Trump dialed up the rhetoric against Iran on Friday, warning the country\u2019s president he \u201cbetter be careful\u201d about his words.<\/p>\n

The war-of-words between Tehran and Washington escalated as President Hassan Rouhani and Trump traded threats and warnings.<\/p>\n

Rouhani told a crowd of hundreds of thousands marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution that \u201cthe Iranian people must be spoken to with respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIranians will make those using threatening language against this nation regret it,\u201d he said. \u201cAnyone threatening Iran\u2019s government and armed forces should know that our nation is vigilant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump was asked about the remarks later, responding that \u201che better be careful.\u201d
\nThe US president has toughened the rhetoric against Iran considerably since coming to office. He has also introduced sanctions after an Iranian missile test.<\/p>\n

Many in Trump\u2019s inner circle want to see a harder line against Tehran, but have so far shied away from killing a deal that saw Iran get sanctions relief in exchange for curbing its nuclear program.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with a brotherly hug and warm words of admiration Friday, as he ditched previously hard-charging rhetoric toward Tokyo during a White House summit.<\/p>\n

Trump praised his guest\u2019s \u201cstrong hands,\u201d the pair\u2019s \u201cvery, very good chemistry\u201d and rolled out a White House military honor guard in a remarkable public display of diplomatic affection.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I greeted him today at the car,\u201d Trump said after an Oval Office meeting, \u201cI shook hands, but I grabbed him and hugged him, because that\u2019s the way we feel.\u201d The odd political couple had lunch at the White House before heading to Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida for further talks and a round of golf on Saturday.<\/p>\n

At Palm Beach airport, the pair were welcomed by a swarm of black SUVs, and a group of onlookers wearing red \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d hats.<\/p>\n

Dozens of Palm Beach residents lined the sidewalks along the route to Trump\u2019s estate, photographing the motorcade and waving American flags.<\/p>\n

The sporting gambit recalled the diplomatic exploits of Abe\u2019s grandfather, prime minister Nobusuke Kishi, who once donned a polo shirt to play with avid golfer president Dwight Eisenhower.Abe is in the United States on a similar charm offensive.<\/p>\n

Then, the topic was post-war reconciliation. This time, the Japanese leader is trying to build a personal rapport with the mercurial new US president and head off simmering disputes.<\/p>\n

Ties have been strained by Trump\u2019s willingness to question US defense commitments and his rejection of a trans-Pacific trade deal.<\/p>\n

Plans under consideration in the White House propose a substantial hike of import tariffs that could have a serious impact on Japanese manufacturers.<\/p>\n

Abe dodged questions about the trade deal, instead dispatching a slew of compliments. \u201cDonald, Mr President, you are an excellent businessman,\u201d he said, praising Trump on everything from his meteoric political rise to his golf game.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy scores in golf are not up to the level of Donald at all,\u201d Abe said self-effacingly. Abe\u2019s efforts appeared to have paid off. After some tough anti-Japanese rhetoric on the campaign trail, Trump embraced long-standing defense agreements and \u201cfree, fair and reciprocal\u201d trade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
