“New York is making a major investment in our greatest asset – our people – and supporting the dreams and ambitions of those who want a better life and are willing to work hard for it. I am honored to have the support of Senator Sanders, who led the way on making college affordability a right, and I know that together we can make this a reality with New York leading the way once again.” Governor Cuomo said.

The Governor’s tuition-free college degree program, entitled the Excelsior Scholarship, resembles a key point in the presidential campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders in the democratic primaries and aims to relieve student debt while empowering disadvantaged students. Senator Sanders joined Cuomo at his announcement in support of the plan. Under the proposal, all students who have been accepted to a SUNY or CUNY (both two-year and 4-year colleges) and are attending full time are eligible to have their tuition fully covered if their family earns $125,000 or less a year. Currently, 80% of NY households statewide meet the financial criteria of the plan with approximately 940,000 households having college-aged children who would be eligible for the scholarship. If the plan is approved New York would be the first state in the nation to roll out a plan of this kind, with many speculating that other

“We are excited to have Governor Cuomo prioritize the educational needs of low and middle-income high school students. By seeking to provide a tuition-free college education to students whose families are earning less than $125,000 a year, Governor Cuomo and his team will not only make college more accessible to students with financial need, but will also transform the lives of entire communities for the better,” said Ms. Tasneem Imam Khan MPH, High School Achievement Program Director.

“I am very grateful that Governor Cuomo's office invited our high school program leaders to this historic announcement. This past year, our SAT & Regents program added leadership with Tasneem Khan MPH, who attended Barnard & later received her Master's from Columbia University. We look forward to all middle-class families enjoying a top notch public education for free once this proposal is passed!” said Dr. Ivan Khan, CEO & President of Khan’s Tutorial

In the past year alone Khan’s Tutorial’s High School Achievement Program led by Ms. Tasneem Khan MPH has helped 84 students score competitively on their SAT or Regents exams. Additionally, Khan’s has helped a substantial amount of students and teammates gain admission to programs including Macaulay Honors College, Sophie Davis, NYU & Columbia with their new Mastering College Admissions workshops.

With 10 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and in the Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Ozone Park, and Floral Park neighborhoods of Queens, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income, new immigrant neighborhoods.
