After the Infiniti was sheared in two, one half of the vehicle slammed into a second car before a dump truck exiting the LIE slammed on its brakes to avoid the crash \u2014 with three trailing cars then piling into one another.<\/p>\n
\u201cI went into a cloud of debris and hit another car,\u201d said one of the drivers from the second crash. \u201cIt was horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown arrived at the eastbound Maurice Ave. exit in Maspeth as authorities investigated the 4:20 a.m. crash.<\/p>\n
According to cops, the Infiniti \u2014 with the driver and four passengers \u2014 was traveling at a high rate of speed before smashing into the guardrail.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe car literally split in half,\u201d a police source said. Three people were ejected from the totaled Infiniti and declared dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
A fourth Infiniti rider was hospitalized in critical condition, while a fifth was listed in stable condition.<\/p>\n
Six people suffered minor injuries in the second wreck involving the dump truck, a yellow taxi, a Hyundai Santa Fe and a black Acura.<\/p>\n
The driver of the vehicle struck by half of the split Infiniti refused medical attention.<\/p>\n
The names of the dead were not immediately released. The survivors of both crashes were taken to Elmhurst Hospital and Queens General Hospital with a variety of injuries, officials said.<\/p>\n
The accidents occurred just after the busy highway interchange where the LIE connects to the Brooklyn Queens Expressway and cuts through Mt. Zion Cemetery.<\/p>\n
The collisions shut down all eastbound lanes for more than four hours as members of the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad investigated the crash. It was not immediately clear if speed was a factor.<\/p>\n
Lanes reopened about 8:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
Wednesday\u2019s crash comes just 10 days after six people were killed and six others injured in a Suffolk County crash on the LIE \u2014 with authorities blaming the wreck on a speeding driver.<\/p>\n
Scott Martella, a 29-year-old former aide to Gov. Cuomo was among those killed when a speeding SUV jumped a median and slammed into two cars on the eastbound side of the LIE in Manorville on Aug. 21.<\/p>\n
Investigators believe that Carmelo Pinales, 26, who died in the wreck along with his 10-year-old son and 21-year-old sister, was going 100 mph when he lost control of his Subaru Outback.<\/p>\n
